Is the product powered from the USB or is there an external power supply?

It is powered solely from the USB port. No external power supply is necessary.

Will it allow me to run my PC as normal but view it on my TV?

Yes.

Does this work with Linux?

Yes it does.

Will the product be able to extend the desktop to the TV to play DVDs and have the laptop displaying something else?

Yes you could, provided you have a dual output graphics card with a second VGA output.
